how to swing a golf clubTo know how to swing a golf club correctly will mean that you have a good understanding of the golf swing itself. Starting with the golf grip, as this is one of the most important parts of your set up. If you get this wrong, and all other parts of your swing are right then you will still struggle to hit the golf ball well and with any consistency. So in order to learn how to swing a golf club well, the grip should always be the first thing you address. You must ensure that you have a neutral grip, one that isn’t too strong or weak. If you have a golf grip that is to strong then you are strongly encouraging a big hook or even a snap hook when you connect with the ball, as the hand will want to naturally turn back to the neutral position on impact and this will close the club face. The same goes for a grip that is too weak, except you will end up hitting a very high fade at the minimum and a big slice at worst, as you will hit the ball with the club face very open.

Your stance also plays a very important role in your set up, as if you get this wrong again then you are doomed to hit a poor shot even before the club begins to move. To know how to swing a golf club correctly, then the stance needs to be in line with the shot you plan to hit. For a beginner all you should be thinking about is getting your stance exactly perpendicular to the club as you address the ball. You should place your feet just wider than your shoulder width for shots with longer clubs such as woods, utility clubs and longer irons. As you go through the bag and hit shorter irons such as a 9 iron and pitching wedge, and sand wedge then you will want to make your stance slightly narrower.

When you have your golf grip and stance working correctly, then the next element will be the take away. This is when you first take the club head back from the ball. Again, if you want to know how to swing a golf club the right way, how to swing a golf club correctlythen this is also a key factor. The main aim here is to start the take away nice and smoothly and ensure the club head moves away on the right line. If you take the club head away to quickly then it will throw the timing out for the rest of the swing. If you take it away on the wrong line then you will find it very difficult to hit the ball straight.

The back swing and the down swing should mirror each other exactly. This means that the path that you lift the club up in for your backswing should be the path that the club comes down on the down swing. If they don’t match then you are going to have a very inconsistent ball strike. Knowing how to swing a golf club consistently well will mean that these two elements are always working on the same swing path.

The follow through is the last element of the golf swing, and again a vitally important part. Now the motion of the club as you swing through the ball will automatically give you a follow through of some kind, but you want to ensure it is a balanced follow through that continues on the same line that you brought the club down to hit the ball. If you find that you don’t have a nice balanced follow through then it is a good indication that you are trying to hit the ball too hard and also that other elements of the swing are out of place.

So to ensure you know how to swing a golf club the right way, you must work on all of these aspects in your golf swing.
